Hello, Jeanette from year 2 here. Just dropping by :). This song certainly brings back memories of my sec school days.

You mentioned the bass line moving in 5ths, which IS true, on the surface. However looking at the bigger picture, I see bars 1-6 as a circle of 5ths. If I remember correctly, it's one of the 2 instances where it cannot be labelled using functional harmony.

Yep, just wanted to make this comment. It's been quite a while since I last touched analysis :)

Thanks for your comment. It's great that you recognize the sequence. Yes, in this case, it's one of those Eschenbach-staircase situations where one appears to be going somewhere but actually returns to square one.

So, Jingxing, in this case, the entire sequence (bs. 1-6) is no more than a tonic expansion.
